A little about Lakewood/Lower Greenville
Lakewood and Lower Greenville are the two most prominent suburbs that make up East Dallas, a neighborhood known for being more laid back in nature. It makes sense, considering the fact that White Rock Lake, Dallas' most popular outdoor venue, sits smack dab in the middle of East Dallas. If you're looking for local shops and restaurants in Lakewood, just look up. The Lakewood Theater marquis, with its art deco flair and colorful history, sits high and proud, welcoming visitors to The Lakewood Shopping Center. Lower Greenville is a mecca for people looking for a casual environment where they can breathe in the nightlife sitting outside with their friends and favorite pooches, drinking local brews, indulging in a variety of local cuisines and people-watching.
The history of Lakewood/Lower Greenville
In the early 20th Century, Greenville Avenue was one of the most important roads in Dallas, serving the new residential areas in East Dallas and indeed played the part that the North Central Expressway (US 75)) plays today. Before the construction of the North Central Expressway in the 1950s, Greenville Avenue was the main route from Northern Dallas into downtown. Lakewood features a large number of Historic and Conservation Districts reflecting prodigious numbers of Craftsman, Prairie-Four Squares, Tudors, Spanish and Mediterranean Eclectic and Early Ranch homes.
